Roxi knelt by the stream, saying nothing as she gulped water from her cupped hands. Her lungs felt like white-hot pokers glowing hotter than the sun. The cold water felt like Heaven, and after she had her fill, she splashed some on her face and body. The breeze caressed her, chilling and delicious.

Finished, she collapsed to the earth in a jarring heap. She wanted only sleep, but it would be many days before that comfort. She sprawled on the ground like a thrown-away doll, her breath still labored, and stared up at the still-full moon illuminating the Missouri countryside in eerie gray. The tall figure loomed over her, and she blinked at him.

This was her protector—this Nephilim who went by the name of Aeris. A fallen angel redeemed by the grace of God, sent for some unknown reason to aid her.

She tried to speak, but her throat was dry. The gurgling waters of the stream worked to hypnotize her. She wanted to sleep—to forget this horrible nightmare of her life.
